Research

In class, we began by watching several music videos on the projector. Music videos such as Fiona Apple – Paper Bag, Madonna – Vogue and Kings of Leon – Sex on fire. By having discussions on a range of different videos, we were able to expand our knowledge on what makes a music video effective. Sharing ideas and quoting other examples set out paths we could go down for when we created out own video. We spent a lesson on “The barracuda song” by the 5,6,7 8′s. We discussed what ideas we had if we created the video, what theme we’d go for and what kind of mise-en-scene and camera work we’d use. Again, by sharing ideas, it encouraged us to start thinking of ideas for our own videos, and also got us enthusiastic. Once we’d done group research, we began our own. We studied different types of music video; Performance, Narrative, Gag, Dance, Club etc… As there was only 5 in our class, each of us got 2 types to research. Once we’d got two examples for each type of music video and written an explanation for each, we shared what we’d found and swapped notes. By doing this, it saved time because we didn’t have to do each one ourselves, but still got all the information.

Next, we got placed into 2 groups with people we wouldn’t usually work with. This encouraged us to work as a team and listen to other peoples ideas and learn to work with them, even though we have never spoken before. We got given a random song, theme and special effect which we had to include, the music video was to last for 30 seconds. Ours was… Are you ready to be heartbroken, walking on a mountain and the special effect was to use stop motion animation. The aim of this task was to give us an insight into how to make a music video, but also so we could share our technical uses. For our final product we used stop motion animation with a pair of scissors cutting through a piece of paper, but also included rota scoping with an envelope and a bird delivering it.

When we began doing research on our own, I used sites such as YouTube, music channels and target audience surveys. YouTube helped my by allowing 24/7 access to which ever video I wanted to look at, it also provided recommendations of other videos similar to the ones I was interested in. Music channels were like a shuffle, so it showed me videos I wouldn’t think of looking up on the net. This helped me as I could take notes on effects and camera work I’d like to use in my own. For target audience surveying, I did this orally and asked 5 people aged between 12 and 18. I asked them questions such as “What genre music video do you usually enjoy watching?” and “Give an example of your favourite Indie music video and why?”. I found that a popular answer for their favourite genre was dance, as the video was often racy, upbeat and involved good camerawork and editing. By this point, I had picked my song; Never be Kissed by Ed Sheeran. I contacted him though MySpace and he was very helpful and got back to me straight away. I knew I was going to be producing an Indie genre video, so I began looking into Indie videos.

Planning

For planning, I used a programme called Celtx. On this programme, one could create a ‘master catalogue’ which held prop lists, actor/actress information, costume lists and what equipment I needed. It also provided a schedule calendar, so I could enter which days I was filming, editing and collecting equipment and props etc. This programme enabled me to have good time management and be very organised, I felt I succeeding particularly well in the time area. Celtx also had an application to construct the storyboards, annotate them and play them as a slide show or export as a PDF. I also storyboarded manually on paper too, this was so I had something to refer to whilst I was filming. I scanned these into the Mac and coloured them with grey scale using a tablet and pen, then on Celtx I could annotate them and select which shots I was going to use for the image (Medium, close up etc). I decided I wanted to make a slide show to post onto my WordPress blog; to do this I imported the images onto Final cut and put them in order, this process was similar to how I created the stop motion animation clothes heart.

Construction

Throughout construction I used Final cut on the Apple Macs. I have used this programme before during last year, so I was already familiar with it. However, as I have advanced in some of my skills and effects I used in my music video, I was unaware how to do some of these as I hadn’t done them before. When I used rota scoping, this how I did it:

Select footage (highlight and cut)

Save as still images

Open in Photoshop

Draw on image, moving a tiny bit at a time (to create movement)

Save again

Import back into Final cut

Put into sequence and cut down to about 0.05 secs

For stop motion animation which I used for the heart, it was a very similar process, but I didn’t need to draw anything on in Photoshop. I used the Graphic tablet throughout a lot of the ancillary tasks, as I found it a lot easier to draw with the pen than using the mouse.

Evaluation

Throughout the evaluation, I mainly used WordPress. However, I have also included video, images and pie charts. By including video, I could back up my analysis by providing evidence. I used the website YouTube to extract music videos which were similar to my own ideas. To use clips from YouTube, I embedded the URL code into WordPress. To include clips from my own music video, I uploaded them onto Bliptv and repeated the same process as to what I did with YouTube videos. To create pie charts I firstly had to collect my results from my audeince feedback, which I did by averaging out written answers. Once I had done that, I transffered this to Microsoft excel where I made a table. I then used to automatic graph constructor which made me a pie chart of my choice which I then has to title and label, simple.

Getting used to WordPress was quite easy, as the layout is professional and simple. The main problem I have come across is the layout of my own text when publishing it to my public blog, it changes. The only way I have found to get around this is by checking what it looks like on the blog, then re-aligning it on the editing page.

Once my music video and ancillary text was complete, I was ready to prepare an audience feedback questionnaire. By doin this, it helped me understand what my target audience thought of the video. I told them that I would rather the constructive criticism than compliments, as they allow me to learn what I could improve on for next time. Here are what questions I asked them

Give a short summary of the narrative in the music video and did you understand it?

What did you most like about the music video?

What did you dislike about the music video?

How could the music video be improved? (Clearer narrative, more technical effects, less transitions etc)

Would you buy this song after watching the video?

What kind of audience would, in your opinion, be most interested in the music video?

What music channel would you expect to see this video on?

Does the video illustrate/amplify or contradict the music/lyrics?

What do you think to the choice of cast, talent, location props etc?

Once I had written broad range of questions cover several aspects of the video, I handed it out to different age groups. This was so I got a variety of answers. From this, I looked at the results and made conclusive and criticisms about the video. The level of response varied due to ability and knowledge in terms of media studies as a subject. I had to take into account that those younger (13), would be less knowledgeable in the effects and transitions, so would be more likely to comment on simple visuals and mise-en-scene. Here are a collections of the final results in a pie chart and also a random answer from each questionnaire:

“The main character dreams and about the girl, however he feels that it is real life. Then realises it’s not real when she disappears”

“How it flowed and made sense. The running shots were really smooth and it was similar to a real music video.”

“First verse of the video was quite repetitive however a wide variety of shots later on over come this”

“Improved effects, for example where the green screen is used”

“Yes I would, it promotes the video really well too”

“It illustrates it because it follows the narrative. The scene with the heart really amplifies the lyrics”

“The cast is good, locations are really well thought up, especially the streets where the chorus’ are taken”

From doing this I have learnt that some of the parts I felt negative about are actually good, and I some people didn’t notice the mistakes I had made. Some of the comments made were a bit silly and knowledgeably immature, “I disliked the bit where the boy runs cause his arms looks wierd”, which I didn’t count as there wasn’t really anything I could do about that. But comments such as “The first verse was quite repetative” were a great help, as it gives insight in to what other people think I could improve. I was already aware that some of the shots are quite similar, so now it’s backed up with another person’s opinion, I’ll know for next time to change this to make it better. My most important questions was “Did you understand the narrative”, as that was the whole aim for this task. I wanted to create a meaningful storyline, and if people didn’t understand this, thenI clearly did a poor job. Luckily, 100% said they understood it. One question which stunted the audience was “What music channel would it be shown on”, the majority said “4 music”, however I’d disagree with that and go for a more indie channel. “4 music” do play indie music, however not if it’s not in the charts. I don’t think that my song would be played in the charts as it’s quite alternative, therefore I think it would be played on a less famous channel.

CD Packaging

I used Edie Birckel and Damien Rice for inspiration for my CD packaging, they both use ‘child-like’ simplistic designs.

The point I’m trying to get across is that I feel that simplistic CD covers are the most effective, it’s not that I just wanted to get out of doing a lot of work. At the end of the day, the CD is the art, so the customer should buy it for that. The CD cover should just promote what the music is like, a teaser, an insight. Damien Rice’s music is soft and very moving, therefore a jazzy, bright and colourful Album cover wouldn’t correspond.

This is the front cover of my Album cover. I began by scribbling spontaneously, I wasn’t actually aiming to create anything. When I saw the design in front of me, it kicked off the idea of which theme I wanted to follow: Child-like. A child doesn’t sit in front of a page for hours trying to think of a drawing he/she wants to do, at most they’re given a subject (house, yourself, your family), and just begin. My song has a subject of innocence, naivety and immaturity. This fits with the ‘child-like’ theme I want to create in my design work for the packaging. The star and “Well done!” I stuck and drew on a piece of paper, scanned in and imposed onto the design. I wanted to experiment with different ideas before finalising. However, even though there were loads of idea I had and wanted to add, I needed to keep it as simple as possible. The simpler, the easier for someone to remember and pick up to buy. The primary colours I used represent a younger child, and tie in together with the scribble, star sticker and childish font for “ed sheeran”.

I researched into children’s drawings and what they usually like to draw, typical things like “Myself”, “Pets” or “My home and family” came up. It concluded that it’s personal, happy things that they like to draw. I thought that the list of songs would go perfect with a hand drawn picture of “Me” when I was “5″. The typical blue sky lining the green grass, and the perfectly round yellow sun represents a common child’s drawing. Also, the meatless figure with flat hair. Again, the drawing/design is simple, therefore plenty attention is left for the list of songs. The font of the writing compliments the design, as it’s also child-like and messy. All of the songs on the song list are Ed Sheeran’s, I didn’t want to make any up as I wanted it to seem as realistic as possible.

This is the back cover of where the CD would be placed. I took into consideration my ‘Children drawing’ research, that they enjoy drawing personal and happy things to them. I thought the rainbow would compliment where the CD is, as it outlines the disc. Also, when I googled “Childerns drawing of a house”, many images of houses under rainbows came up. I think that it’s a false sense of security to have a rainbow protecting their home prehaps. Although my packaging doesn’t clearly link to my video, the theme runs throughout both. I could have easily chosen some good frames in my video, edited them on Photoshop and added some words, however it would fit the theme, it would only link through the eye.

This is the back cover of the booklet (opposite side of where the CD is placed). I wanted to link my packaging even more to my video, so I decided to use a memorable link from Never be Kissed. Again, during my research, I found that Children love to draw obvious animals (Dogs, Cats, Lions, Horses), not exotic ones. When I listened to my song, I picked out “And when you dig your claws in deep…”, and immediately thought of a Lion. The drawing to the right is in fact an imposed picture which I got a younger cousin of mine to draw, I just added colour with the graphic tablet. The spiky main, extra long tail and zig-zag mouth is perfect for an immature child’s representation of a Lion. Also prehaps the connection of “claws” and a Lion’s reputation for being mean and nasty.

Booklet

I didn’t want to leave it as just the front, back and two middle covers of the CD packaging as I had further ideas. So I created a CD booklet too. The idea of the booklet was to carry out several drawings throughout the booklet on random pages to show the development of a child through his/her drawings. Including lyrics in an Album involved the audience, so that they can relate to the songs whilst listening to them.

Magazine Advertisement

Once I had completed my Music Video, the next part of the task was to complete a digi pack and magazine advertisement. I began my research by looking through magazines such as NME and Kerrang. I found NME most helpful as it provided a wide range of genres, rather than just Rock or Pop etc. One of my favourite advertisements was Florence and the Machine. The only colour on the page is of the Album cover, which makes it a focal point. The writing is plain white on a black background which keeps it simplistic, clear and informative. The image include the main singer, Florence, which promotes her as a singer aswell as the concert the advertisement is selling. The writing is linear and is structured from top to bottom, this encourages the reader to read the whole poster, rather than just the top or the bottom. By breaking up the writing with an image, it encourages the reader to be more interested. If there was a page full of writing, the reader may be uninterested and not bother to read the promotion, however this is short and keeps to basic information needed. There are small record label icon at the bottom of the page, this gives their company promotion too.

Once I’d done enough research for my magazine advertisement, I decided to play around with a few ideas of my own. I’d already completed my CD album covers by this point, so I thought it would be a good idea to use the same designs but edit them slightly. The front of the album cover is very simplistic, and I felt that it would be too simple to just use the same design, so I knew that I needed to add something to make it more interesting. By keeping a similar design of the album on the magazine advertisement, it makes it easier for the reader to spot the album on the shelves in the shops.

I decided to include the ACTUAL singer of Never Be Kissed, Ed Sheeran. I used one of his photos and drew it on Photoshop using a graphic tablet. I then saved this ready to impose it onto my magazine advertisement. Athough Phil isn’t the actual singer of Never be Kissed, he does appear in the video a lot, therefore it seemed silly not to include him on an advertisement. I kept the drawing of him very simple in order to keep to the theme of immaturity, innocence and naivety. The album covers are kept child like, so I needed to keep this image similar without it looking to messy.

The song is very upbeat, and it has an easy tune and simple lyrics to sing along to. Therefore, I wanted to keep the information on the advertisement as simple as possible, which is why I just wrote the name of the artist and that it is “Out now”. By keeping the image on the advertisement as big as possible, it is very eye-catching and makes it a focal point which will allow the reader to remember it and therefore remember the album cover too. One of the comments in my audience feedback said that because the song is easy to remember, they would buy it. So therefore I carried idea into my packaging and advert… Easy to remember.

Here is a combination on 9 frames throughout my Music Video, I have chosen them carefully and precisely in order to support how my video reflects real media products.

1. The promotion of the band/song

Throughout my Music video, I ensured that Phil was foregrounded as the real singer. It was important to have performance to represent that it was actually a music video, rather than just footage supporting a music track. I struggled with how to film my chorus, as it first seemed very difficult to film Phil running towards the camera. However, by placing the camera in the boot of my car and driving slowly, I had a result of smooth and effective footage. I wanted Phil to appear he was running away from reality, yet at the same time he was expressing his emotions. The different locations keep the video refraining from being repetitive, and it keeps the audience interested. When reviewing my feedback, the chorus’ were had very positive comments and it had the highest percentage of being their favourite part of the video. It was noted from other comments that it actually appear that Phil is the singer of the song, even though my audience was told he was lip syncing.

Another example of this use of performance is in Tony Chritie’s (Is this the way to) Amarillo, mimed my Peter Kay. This wasn’t filmed how I did mine, a dolly on a track was used and also a treadmill in some parts. However, the effect has resulted exactly the same with smooth camera work and effective framing. Peter Kay’s video uses different characters from famous Tv shows such as Coronation Street, also having Bungle Bear (Shown to the left) suggests a comical element. Moreover, the whole video is highly entertaining and interests the viewer.

2. Setting/location

I wanted to create an everyday setting for all of my locations used in the video, as they needed to match the genre of my song and story line. The song has ‘laid back’ vibe to it, and the story line is of an every day ‘naive teenage’ situation. The location is important to a music video as it supports the song genre, and also is needed to interest the audience. The first location is set in/at a bus shelter, where the audience are first introduced to Lisa and more of Phil. By keeping the setting basic, the audience will have more of a focus on the characters and the story. The locations provides seating for the two girls to sit and gossip, and a wall for Phil to hide behind whilst admiring Lisa. The second location is in a typical boy’s room, this provides a personal insight into the main character as they see into his bedroom. The third is on the street which again is a very basic location, however effective when used with the different lighting from the car’s headlights and street lamp. The screen shot about is from Verse 1, the bus stop scene. I was able to get many different shots from this location, inside and out. It made it interesting as even though Phil was stood a metre away from the two girls, the different shots made it seem as if they were in a different location (exception of establishing shots). The locations of the chorus’ were all different to create an interest for the audience, using the same would make it seem repetitive.

Here is an example of a video where the location does not change, Elbow – One day like this. The video shows a young male holding a sale sign for “Condos”, which he twists and turns throughout. It could be viewed as theatrical or artistic, however somebody watching this for pleasure or interest may get bored, as it is extremely repetitive. Something like Madonna – Hung up, the location changes throughout the video, however always refers back to the singer in the dance studio. By always coming back to the original location, this promotes the song/singer, yet keeps the audience interested.

3. Lighting

To correspond with the everyday setting, I wanted to keep the lighting as natural as possible. The bus stop shelter was easy to keep bright as it was filmed early in the day, therefore no enhancement was needed. The chorus’ were the same, as they were filmed around the same time too. However, the bedroom scene required re-filming as the lighting was way too dark. When I watched it back through the camera I filmed on, it appeared bright enough however, when I uploaded it, it wasn’t clear enough. The only lighting I used in the room the first time was a standard ceiling light and daylight though the window. The second time round, I plugged in 4 different lights and placed them around the room. I also filmed slightly later in the day so the daylight shining through the window wasn’t so powerful. The second load of footage was hugely better in quality.

I wanted to create the effect of a passing day through my video, which is why the natural lighting gets darker – other than in the chorus’. The Bus stop scene is in late morning light, the bedroom is in the middle of the day and the final scene, verse 3, was shot in a dusk lighting (4pm-5pm). This had good and bad qualities, the screen shot on the far left is of bad quality. I had to brighten the shot several times on Final Cut, which is why it is slightly pixellated. I stood her under a street lamp which gave off a dull pink light, I thought that this would brighten up her face, however it only down very slightly. The shot to the right is one of my favourite frames in the verse as the headlight of the car brighten up Phil’s face and also the rain which was falling at the time. The natural sky light in the back ground contrasts to the scenery in the foreground.

4. Costumes and Props

The prop list was minimal as I didn’t want to go over the top with different items. The main prop used throughout the vide was Phil’s glasses, which he doesn’t wear in reality. The glasses signified that he was a ‘geek’ and didn’t conform to a stereotypical ‘teenage boy’. When I did a viewing, 100% of the audience could read his character through his costume and glasses, so I excelled in this part. Lisa wore everyday clothing for a stereotypical teenage girl, this enabled the audience to easily read her character, without struggling and forgetting to understand the storyline. Chloe wore similar clothing, which signified her friendship with Lisa and that they were in the same ‘group’. I wanted Adam and Phil to contrast (shows to the right), to show that they were very different characters. So I dressed him in a hoody and combat trousers, this also enhanced his appearance of a bully.

In the video Black eye peas - I gotta feeling, right from the beginning there are young women shows getting dressed up and walking around in heels and short dresses. This immediately informs the audience that the song is going to be about partying/clubbing/going out, before the song even begins. It attracts a certain type of audience too, younger generation. The same sort of costume continues throughout the video, which keeps it simple yet interesting.

5. Camerawork and editing

I wanted to make sure that throughout my music video the camerawork was as interesting as possible however, I couldn’t use to extravagant shots as it wouldn’t fit to my genre of music. One of my favourite shots is where Phil looks at Lisa though his glasses, this shows things from his perspective and makes the audience feel involved. In fact, this shot wasn’t planned, I didn’t include it in my story boarding. Interesting shots in music videos keep the audience interested, by using frequent establishing and mid-shots it gets very repetitive. However, I wasn’t too emphatic with this, as more racy shots would have fit a hip-hop/dance music genre, or maybe rock. Mine is soft indie, so I wanted to keep them simple. Aswell as using choppy editing, I also used transitions where needed. There are 3 disappearances during the video in each verse, I used a ‘cross dissolve’ transition to allow a smooth disappearance of the character. Also, at the end of the video, I fade it out to black when Phil walks off screen, this promotes the closure.

I feel that I have improved hugely since my project in lower sixth. The camera angles and framing I used were very unprofessional and simplistic (unintentional), and I used far too many transitions in uneccessary places. I felt that my editing last year was of quality, however a bigger improvement this year on choppy scenes by keeping it short.

6. Interpretation of lyrical content

This shot is a prime example of where I interpreted lyrical content into the footage. Here is a short list of which lyrics I matched to the footage and what I did:

1. “Put me out, once again”. – Shows Phil’s embarrassment and shaking head in despair when Lisa sees him looking at her.

2. “You can rip mine right out of me” – Chloe and Adam point and laugh at Phil when he’s holding hands with his Mum.

3. “I made my bed, and she lay in it first” – Phil’s feet walking to his bed, he jumps onto it, then a close up when he lands.

4. “Cut me up, put me in the mood” – Phil turns over on his bed upset, then Lisa appears as “Put me in the mood” is sung.

5. “Put me back together like a rubix cube” – Clothes come together to form a heart on the bedroom floor

6. “Put those thoughts with itchy feet” – Phil rubs feet together with Lisa’s (Shown above)

7. “And when you dig your claws in deep” – Lisa digs her fingers into Phil’s chest

8. “When I blink, I saw thought through the headlights” – Car with headlights on pass Phil

By interpreting the lyrical content into the song, it links both of them together. This also helped me plan out a storyline for when I was storyboarding etc, I began by matching what I could film to the lyrics of the song and working from there. Another example of this is used in Kate Nash’s Foundations Music video

The video matches the lyrical content in the song, but also uses comedy to make it funny. When she sings about how her friends are embarrassed of the couple, it shows some toy miniature farm animals turning their back on them. Also the lyric “You say I should eat so many lemons” shows her eating a pile of lemons in the video. Also showing her using boxing gloves when she sings about fighting.

7. Emphatic editing to the beat

When I first edited my footage, the shots were far too long. So to overcome this, I filmed some more basic shots and added them to fit to the beat. This made the video a lot more snappy and eye-catching. The shot of Lisa above, I edited so that she smiles to specific lyric (not matching the lyric). I did this to link the song to the footage, and keep the audience interested.

Quick editing and extravagant camera work is usually used in dance music videos, for example Cascada – Evacuate the dance floor. The beat is quite faster, therefore the shots need to fit to it to keep it interesting. If the shots were prolonged, then the footage wouldn’t match the song. There are also transitions between some shots which allows the different locations to blend smoothly into each other.

8. How characters are introduced

Phil was the first character to be introduced, this was to signify that he was going to be the main character in the video. I wanted to suspend the first introduction of Phil’s character to reflect his personality; shy. Below is like a time line of each clip shown before the audience see Phil’s face. It give his character mystery, also a sense of ‘not all is what it appears’.

Lisa is introduced talking to her friend, which gives her a sense of normality. As she is the second character to be introduced, the audience understand that she is the one who will be the ‘love interest’.

9. Special Effects

The shot above is where I used Rota scoping to form a though bubble. To do this I drew the bubbles on Photoshop with a graphic tablet, then imposed them onto the footage in Final cut. Next I imposed footage of Lisa into the top thought bubble and locked it all together. I wanted a cartoon bit in it to emphasise my theme of teenage naivety, and immaturity. Another video which does this is Nizlopi’s JCB song,

The disappearances in the video are a result of Phil’s ‘fantasies’, therefore I wanted to show to the audience his thoughts. This was the only way to make it obvious, and I feel it works very well. The other special effect I used was stop motion animation with the clothes heart forming. I did this by taking a series of 120 photographs of the clothes coming together, by moving each garment 0.5cm each time. Then imported them all onto Final Cut, each photo was put into a clip of 10 secs, so I had to cut each photograph clip into a clip of 0.05 for to look like it was moving effectively.

Here are some rough ideas for my CD album packaging;

Once I experimented I constructed ideas for my final front cover. I wanted to go for a childish look, expressing the naivety which is also in my music video. This is the final product:

To match the front cover, I also created a back cover of the CD booklet, Back cover of the Album and CD placing.

This is the back cover of the CD booklet

This is the back cover of the CD Album casing

This is where the CD would be placed (Middle of rainbow)

This is a summary of editing and everything I have done to get the finished product, in my past account I listed things I needed to change, but this time I am going to list everything I did to finish up:

Credits added - By credits, I mean Artist name and song title. I added this at the beginning of the video at the end, which introduces it and reminds the audience once it is finished. I decided to use a plain Ariel font for this, as I wanted the attention to be solely focused on what the credits are saying, not the emphatic font. I also wanted it to be easily read, so it could be quick and the attention could move onto the video itself.

New shot for intro added – I added a close up of Phil’s hand into the introduction of the video, this allowed the whole series of clips to run better with the beat and it moved a lot quicker. The more shots which held suspense seeing Phil’s face added mystery to him too.

Close up of Chloe removed - There was a close up of the girl sat next to Lisa in the bus stop, Chloe. I removed this as I wanted the camera to perceive that Phil’s attention was solely on Lisa, and the close up made it seem he was looking at Chloe too.

All shots are emphatic to the beat – After going through the video several times, I ensured that all of the shots are emphatic to the beat. As I have mentioned several times now, this is my main aim and it makes the video a lot more consistent and professional.

Hand held with Mother shortened – The clip where Phil is holding hands with his ‘Mother’, is now cut down and fits a lot better.

Thought bubbles added – The rota scope thought bubbles have now been added and I am extremely pleased with these. I constructed them in Photoshop using a blank layer, and then layering them on top of my footage. I added footage of Lisa in the final bubble, this was done by filling the bubble with green and importing the clip in.

Stop motion animation heart beats - At first, the clothes formation of a heart just flickered on the floor, but I carefully arranged the images so it appeared to be beating. This looks a lot better, and is more interesting as it adds life to the clip.

I’m not adding any more footage, as I have finished my filming schedule. However, I am still going to keep editing to get the best finish for my music video. There are special effects that I still need to add to the video, but I want to finish editing all of the footage before I add them. By making rough cuts and creating notes like these, it helps to see exactly where I need to edit and how;

Close up in the Bus stop does not hit beat – The third close up shot in the bus stop does not hit the beat, it comes in 0.7 of a second afterwards. True, this may not be noticeable to the naked eye, but my main aim for this video was to make sure the shots are emphatic to the music/lyrics. I will shave literally the tiniest amount from the clip so that it fits directly to the beat.

Hand hold with Mother too long – The shot with Phil holding ‘his’ Mother’s hand is too long which makes the video boring for the audience, I shall probably shave some off of this clip, and slightly lengthen the clips it is in-between

Thought bubbles needed – The rota scope formation of thought bubbles still need to be added to the clip, I will do this in Photoshop.

Phil looks down – When Phil realises he is stood with his Mum rather than Lisa, he looks directly to the floor just as the clip finishes, this needs taking out as it ruins the whole shot. Mistake.

During this stage of editing, there was thing I added and then deleted as it didn’t fit with the rest of the music video. The slow chorus looked very plain, as it was simply Phil with a black background, so I came up with the idea of adding lyrics to the chorus and placing them beside him (2 videos below). I did this using Live type, then placing them on top of the footage in a big enough space beside Phil’s head. After watching this part through several times, I thought it looked professional and it fit really well together. however, after watching the whole of the video through with this included, I realised that it didn’t fit in with the video as a whole. I asked a few of my class mates to see what they thought, and they also said that it didn’t really fit in.

WITHOUT lyrics

WITH lyrics

There were parts which I corrected from the second stage of editing which I am pleased with; the introduction clips at the beginning fit in a lot better and hit the beats (emphatic editing). Not only does this look more professional, but it also allows the video to run a lot smoother. My idea about having a rota scope heart drawn around Lisa at the beginning, I replaced. Instead, I added a few close-ups. I felt this worked better and looked more professional, the cartoon heart would have appeared too childish. I have now added the stop motion animation heart formation, I am really pleased with this as it came out exactly how I wanted it to. I may play around with a few of the clips so it runs a little smoother though, as in some parts it looks too mechanical. I also added a close up of Phila nd Lisa on the bed, this was because one of the clips on the bed was too long, so I needed to a shot to fill up the time. Luckily I took a few spare shots in case this ever happened. I have brightened verse 3 completely, it is miles better now as the audience can see the faces of all the characters a lot clearer now. By brightening it all it looks more consistent and professional.
